What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry encompasses not just the health of the teeth, but also their aesthetic value. There are multiple products and procedures that exist within cosmetic dentistry that allow the patient to improve both their well-being and visual beauty of their teeth. Cosmetic dentistry also gives the individual a higher level of self-confidence.

What are the benefits of cosmetic dentistry?

The answer here is “What’s the value of a beautiful smile?” Most people say they are attracted to people with attractive characteristics. That applies whether you’re in Melbourne, Florida or Melbourne, Australia. Having a beautiful perfect smile delivered by Implant Dentistry of Florida can really give your self-confidence a boost. After all, if you’ve had a chipped front tooth, if you’ve had a gap between two teeth, or if you have a number of teeth permanently stained by a reaction to tetracycline as a child, the odds are you subconsciously hide your smile.

No longer. With these flaws addressed through porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, or our other cosmetic tools, you’ll be able to show the world a beautiful smile. It’s hard to put a value on that feeling.

Tooth Bonding/White Fillings

Tooth bonding or dental bonding is a procedure that restores, rejuvenates, improves the function and appearance of teeth. Our doctors will apply bonding material to repair chipped, broken or cracked teeth. The bonding material is perform for filling in the spaces between teeth. The composite resin used for bonding is always tooth-colored to match your natural tooth color.

Dental Implants

If you have a missing tooth or teeth, dental implants are one of the best cosmetic options! A dental implant is an artificial tooth root placed into your jaw. These implants look and feel so natural, that you won’t even know you lost a tooth. At Implant Dentistry of Florida, we offer “Teeth In A Day” – a process in which our doctors remove diseased or failing teeth, inserts dental implants, and affixes a full set of natural-looking artificial teeth all in the same day.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are used to span the gap created by a missing tooth. At Implant Dentistry of Florida, dental bridges are designed and fabricated using our CEREC 3D system. The bridges are made as a single piece and is permanently cemented onto your teeth. If you keep up with your oral health, these bridges can last up to 15 years.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a prosthetic that is made to cover an existing tooth. These porcelain caps are made to save a tooth that is endanger of extraction. Thanks to our CEREC 3D system, the crowns process can be completed in one day. The lifespan of your crown depends on the health of the tooth, but typically the crown will last for 20 years.

Tooth Whitening & Bleaching

At Implant Dentistry of Florida, we use the ZOOM! bleaching system to whiten our patient’s teeth. With our in-office whitening system, you will receive safe, effective, and fast results in about 45 minutes. In one single visit, your teeth can be up to 10 shades whiter and brighter. We also provide take-home trays for at-home whitening.

Dental Inlays/Onlays

Dental inlays and onlays can be used instead of traditional dental fillings. Inlays/onlays her treat tooth decay and other damage. This type of filling is designed to strengthen the tooth. An inlay is typically inside the tips or the tooth, while an onlay is designed to extend beyond the cusps of the tooth.

Full-Arch Restoration

When the majority or all of a patient’s teeth on one arch are missing or are decayed or damaged to the degree they will need extraction, then it’s necessary to perform a full-arch restoration. This will replace all of your teeth on your upper or lower arch with a full arch of artificial teeth.

The key to these restorations is how they are anchored. Four or six dental implants are placed in strategic locations in the jawbone along the arch. These locations based off diagnostic imaging of your jawbone. Unlike regular dental implants where an abutment is attached to the titanium implant base and an artificial tooth is attached to the abutment, in this case, the abutment is a ball and socket type connection. These will click onto the corresponding accepting connectors on the arch of artificial teeth.

The four or six anchor points in these full-arch restorations give patients confidence in their new prosthetic. And their smile is completely changed from its damaged former state.

Smile Makeover

Smile makeovers are cosmetic in nature, but they can also correct serious dental issues such as missing teeth. The idea is to give the patient a smile they are excited to show off, a smile that gives them new self-confidence. Smile makeovers involve various procedures depending on the needs of the patient. For instance, if a patient simply has badly stained teeth from a reaction to tetracycline when he or she was a child, all that may be needed are porcelain veneers. If a patient has a badly decayed tooth, he or she may need a crown or an implant, plus veneers. Smile makeover is just a term encompassing the necessary procedures to renew the patient’s smile, making is cosmetically perfect.

Dr. Brown, Dr. Robbins, and Dr. Martinez ascertain what you would like to improve with the appearance of your smile, and then they design your smile makeover from there. Smile makeovers will typically involve more than one or two treatments or procedures.

Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening, or crown exposure, is performed when there is not enough existing tooth exposed to place a restoration. This procedure is typically performed after a tooth has broken or there is significant decay. The procedure involves incisions in the gums to expose more of the tooth.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin shells that are placed over the front of your natural teeth. These dental veneers will alter the shape, size, color, or position of the teeth. They are used to cover cosmetic problems and imperfections. Veneers are typically permanent solutions to cover damaged teeth. Porcelain veneers can last up to 20 years if you remain in good dental health.

Dentures are special appliances used to replace missing teeth. This procedure is recommended for those who are missing several or all of the upper/lower teeth. At our practice, we will make custom dentures to ensure proper fit. It is important to clean and properly maintain your dentures. High quality dentures can last up to 8 years.

Invisalign Melbourne FL

If you would like a straight, aligned beautiful smile without metal braces, we offer Invisalign at our Melbourne office. Invisalign uses clear aligners to straighten teeth, which are worn for 20-22 hours a day. These aligners are basically invisible and you simply remove them to eat and clean your teeth. Are your various cosmetic dentistry treatments painful?

Most of these procedures offer aesthetic improvements to the quality of your smile; they’re not restorations. There are a few exceptions, as implants, bridges, crowns, dentures, and Invisalign aren’t simply cosmetic in nature. But treatments such as bonding and teeth whitening are painless. Replacing old silver amalgam fillings with virtually invisible composite resin involves a minor amount of local anesthesia. Porcelain veneers and fitting dentures are painless procedures.

There is a small amount of discomfort after the doctor places a titanium implant base as your gums need to heal for a few days. But the limited amount of pain is such that there’s no need for prescription pain medication.

Crown lengthening has some discomfort during recovery, as your gums will have been shortened and will need to heal.

What if I suffer from dental anxiety?

Have no fear, literally, of our team at Implant Dentistry of Florida. We offer three types of dental sedation to help our anxious patients manage their fear. We offer nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or IV sedation to keep our patients completely comfortable. Plus, a nice side benefit of sedation is that it creates a slight amnesic after effect where you have little recollection of your visit.

How can I maintain my results from my cosmetic dentistry treatments?

There are two aspects to maintaining your great looking smile. First, you’ll want to be diligent with your home hygiene. This isn’t difficult; it simply takes commitment. You’ll floss at least once daily. Flossing should be done ahead of brushing. You’ll want to brush twice daily for two minutes using an ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste. If you want to improve your brushing, switch to one of the many ADA-approved electric toothbrushes out there. They have been shown in research to improve patient hygiene.

The second part of your maintenance is being sure to keep your schedule of twice-yearly professional cleanings and exams with Dr. Brown, Dr. Robbins, or Dr. Martinez. During these appointments we remove any tartar that has accumulated in your usual locations, and we clean away plaque and minor staining with our special abrasive tooth polish. Plus, if we do spot anything going on with your oral health, something such as early decay in a tooth or the beginning of gum disease, we can alert you and address the problem before it becomes a bigger one.

Also, our Zoom! teeth whitening treatments are a great way to periodically whiten your teeth. That keeps them looking great.
